Beer Mat Mother's Day Keepsake Box
Something a little different for Mother's Day, a keepsake box 'altering' beer mats
 |
|
Materials
For this project you will need:
6 square beer mats all the same
2 co-ordinating sheets of 12 x 12 backing paper
1 x A4 sheet of thin white card
A good length of orange ribbon for binding the box and 2 small pieces of co-ordinating ribbon
Funky foam
Brads
Double sided tape
Craft knife
Silicone glue
Distress inks in Dried Marigold and Mustard Seed
Mini Mister
Equipment:
Big shot, Sizzix 'Mother'die, X-Cut medium daisy punch, hole punch and eyelet setter, cutting mat
|
 |
|
Step 1
Taking the beer mats put double sided tape around all four edges on both sides as close to the edge as possible.
Using one sheet of co-ordinating 12 x 12 paper, remove the tape from one side of the mat and lay on the back of the paper. Using the craft knife run carefully around the edge on the cutting mat so that the mat is completely covered. Do this on one side of all the beer mats.
Taking the co-ordinating sheet of 12 x 12 turn over the mats and repeat the process so that the beer mats are covered on both sides

Step 2
We need to punch holes to enable us to bind the box together. I am fortunate enough to have a Zutter Bind it All which I have used to make my holes but a substantial hole punch or crop-a-dial or eyelet setter will do the same job.
I have punched six holes for threading. Two of the mats need holes punching on all four sides, three mats require holes on 3 sides and one (the lid) requires holes on one edge only.

 |
|
Step 3
Using the baking sheet and the two distress ink pads, dab the pads onto the sheet several times to that a residue of ink is left. Using the mist spray, spritz the inks so that they 'bead'.
|
 |
|
Step 4
Using the punch, punch out lots of the daisies from the thin white card. Put the white daisies onto diluted ink on the baking sheet so that they are covered with the ink, you should have both colours blending onto the white card.
When they have dried, taking two flowers, attach together using the small brad. You will need plenty of these as they are the decoration on the box.
Cut 2 of the 'Mother' dies in funky foam, one in orange and one in yellow. Carefully removing the letters and butterfly in yellow, stick directly over the top of the orange die cut.
Using glitter glue, hi-light the top layer of the petals on the assembled flowers and the butterfly and wording on the die cut. Leave to dry.

|
Step 5
While the glitter is drying we now assemble the box using the ribbon. One of the mats with holes on all four sides is the base so loosely threading through we attach 3 of the beer mats with holes punched on three sides and the other mat with holes on all four sides, this one is the back of the box where we attach the lid.
|
 |
|
Step 6
I have threaded the ribbon in a 'criss-cross' fashion down the sides of the box as I think it looks more decorative and tied at the top in a little knot.
The lid I have done in the same way but with a longer piece of ribbon and tied into a bow. Two holes punched and set with eyelets at the front of the box so we can use ribbon to tie the lid closed.
|
 |
|
Embellishing the project
Finally, taking the dry embellishments made and using silicone glue attach the Mother die to the lid of the box. Taking the daisies, randomly attach these again with silicone glue on the lid and sides.
A piece of ribbon is threaded through and tied into a bow to hold the lid closed and another threaded through the holes in the corner with the other bow.
The box is now ready to use and a gift of your choice placed inside.
